On 6th June 2004 the Aquarium of the Po river was inaugurated in Motta Baluffi in the lower territory of Cremona.
The project was co-financed by the European Union and by the Local Action Group (GAL) Oglio-Po – Lands of Water.
The purpose of the Aquarium is to become a tool to revitalize and enhance the area by showing, in aquariums and small tanks, the fish fauna that lives in the Po river. The structure is one of the many initiatives that aim at enhancing the environmental and landscape resources of the territory, and it is hosted in the barn of the Ronchetto farmhouse, a farm about 4 km from the village in a holm area. Located on the border of the natural reserve “Lanca di Giarole” (Ox
bow lake of Giarole), 200 metres from the river and 700 metres from the marina, the structure has got 70 tanks where the water environment of the river is reproduced; it comprises several native and allochthonous fish species that can be found in the Po valley. The following fish can be seen: carps, pikes, sturgeons, basses, eels, along with bivalve shells, crayfish, turtles, toads and water-fleas.
The considerable varieties of remarkable naturalistic importance will increase the educational and instructive value of the visit, and the renewed ecological and environmental balance achieved by our river will also be highlighted.
The Aquarium can be reached via river from the Port of Cremona in two hours.
